Kitengela Is On Fire: Kenyans Are Going Crazy Due To High Price Of Fuel

Residents of Kitengela took to the streets in large numbers on Tuesday as demonstrations erupted over the continued rise in fuel prices, bringing normal operations in the busy town to a standstill.

The protests, which began early in the morning, saw groups of youths and local residents block major roads, light bonfires, and chant slogans demanding immediate government intervention.

The demonstrations disrupted transport along key routes linking Kitengela to Nairobi, leaving commuters stranded for hours.

Public service vehicles were unable to operate as roads became impassable, forcing many workers to either walk long distances or return home.

Businesses also remained closed, with traders fearing looting and damage to property as tensions escalated throughout the day.

Protesters expressed frustration over the rising cost of living, blaming the surge in fuel prices for the increase in food and transport costs.

Many argued that the hikes have made it increasingly difficult for ordinary citizens to meet their daily needs.

Chanting and waving placards, they called on the government to review fuel pricing policies and provide relief measures to cushion vulnerable households.

“We can no longer survive like this,” said one protester, who joined hundreds of others gathered along the main highway. “Every time fuel prices go up, everything else follows.

Food, transport, even rent—it’s becoming unbearable.” Similar sentiments were echoed by boda boda riders and matatu operators, who said their businesses have been severely affected by the rising cost of fuel.

Security officers were deployed to the area in an attempt to restore order and disperse the crowds.

At several points, police engaged protesters in running battles as they tried to clear the roads and extinguish burning debris. Tear gas was used in some instances, prompting protesters to scatter before regrouping in nearby streets.

Despite these efforts, the demonstrations persisted for several hours, with intermittent clashes reported.

Local leaders called for calm and urged residents to express their grievances peacefully. Some leaders acknowledged the legitimacy of the concerns raised by protesters, noting that the rising cost of fuel has had a ripple effect across the economy.

However, they emphasized the need to avoid destruction of property and ensure the safety of all residents.

The protests in Kitengela come amid growing discontent across the country over the rising cost of living.

In recent months, fuel prices have continued to climb, triggering public outcry and calls for government action.

Analysts warn that if the situation is not addressed, similar demonstrations could spread to other parts of the country.

As the day progressed, a heavy police presence remained in Kitengela, with authorities closely monitoring the situation to prevent further escalation.

By evening, some roads had been cleared, allowing limited movement to resume, although tensions remained high.

For many residents, the demonstrations served as a stark reflection of the economic pressures facing ordinary Kenyans.

While the protests disrupted daily life, they also highlighted the growing frustration among citizens who feel increasingly burdened by rising costs and uncertain economic conditions.
