Separate Road Accidents Along Gilgil Section Of Nakuru-Nairobi Highway That Killed Many

At least four people have died following two separate road accidents along the busy Nakuru-Nairobi highway near Gilgil, police have confirmed.

The tragic incidents, which occurred hours apart, once again raised concerns over safety along one of Kenya’s busiest transport corridors that has frequently witnessed fatal crashes involving public service vehicles, private cars, and trucks.

According to police reports, the first accident occurred in the early morning hours near the Gilgil weighbridge area when a private vehicle reportedly lost control before colliding head-on with an oncoming lorry.

Witnesses at the scene said the impact of the collision was severe, leaving the smaller vehicle extensively damaged and trapping occupants inside.

Emergency responders and members of the public rushed to the scene to rescue survivors as traffic built up along the highway.

Police confirmed that two people died on the spot while another victim sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Authorities said preliminary investigations suggested that speeding and poor visibility may have contributed to the accident, although a full investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause.

Just hours later, another fatal accident occurred a few kilometres away involving a motorcycle and a commercial vehicle.

Police said the motorcycle rider and a passenger died after the bike collided with the vehicle while attempting to overtake along a busy section of the highway.

The second accident caused panic among motorists and residents who gathered at the scene as police officers worked to clear the road and restore traffic flow.

The bodies of the deceased were moved to local mortuaries pending identification and postmortem examinations.

Gilgil police officers urged motorists to exercise caution, especially along sections of the Nakuru-Nairobi highway known for frequent accidents and heavy traffic congestion.

“This road continues to experience many fatal accidents, and we are appealing to drivers to observe traffic rules, avoid speeding, and remain patient while driving,” a police officer at the scene said.

The Nakuru-Nairobi highway is considered one of the country’s most dangerous roads due to the high number of vehicles using the route daily.

The road serves as a major link between Nairobi and western Kenya, as well as neighbouring countries in the East African region.

Residents and road safety advocates have repeatedly raised concerns about reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, poorly maintained vehicles, and limited enforcement of traffic regulations along the route.

Following the latest accidents, road users called on authorities to intensify patrols and install additional safety measures in accident-prone areas around Gilgil and Naivasha.

Some residents also urged the government to speed up plans for road expansion and improved signage to reduce the growing number of crashes.

“These accidents are becoming too common. Almost every week we hear of another fatal crash along this highway,” one resident said. “Something serious must be done to save lives.”

The incidents come amid renewed national conversations about road safety in Kenya, where hundreds of people lose their lives annually through traffic accidents.

According to road safety officials, human error remains the leading cause of crashes, with speeding, drunk driving, reckless overtaking, and driver fatigue contributing significantly to fatalities.

Emergency response teams have also continued to face challenges accessing some accident scenes quickly due to traffic congestion and limited rescue resources.

As investigations into the two Gilgil accidents continue, families of the victims were left mourning loved ones whose lives ended suddenly on a highway that has become synonymous with tragedy.

Police have appealed to motorists travelling along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway to remain vigilant, maintain safe driving speeds, and follow all traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life.

Traffic flow along the affected sections was later restored after police cleared the wreckage and completed preliminary investigations at both scenes.

The latest tragedies serve as yet another painful reminder of the urgent need for improved road discipline, stronger enforcement of traffic laws, and enhanced safety measures on Kenya’s highways.
